Shamsiah menyertai Rejimen ke-10 iaitu sayap Melayu PKM.
Beliau bersama suaminya Ibrahim, bertugas di China, Indonesia dan Vietnam dalam rangka meniup semangat nasionalisme kepada penduduk Asia Tenggara yang masih di bawah penjajahan.
Selepas terpisah daripada PKM, beliau terus berada di China menyambung hidupnya dengan bekerja di kilang besi.
Beliau sekeluarga akhirnya kembali ke Malaysia pada 23 Julai 1994, selepas termetrainya Perjanjian Damai antara PKM dengan kerajaan Malaysia dan kerajaan Thailand pada 1989.

Anaknya, Jamaluddin Ibrahim, yang fasih dalam bahasa cina merupakan penganalisa politik terkenal di masyarakat cina Malaysia.

I am saddened by the demise of Madam Shamsiah Fakeh. She embodies a person with principles in life . She is great in many ways. I read the book that she wrote and i truly felt for her. She survived many ordeals and went through a difficult time all for the sake of this country. She had no choice but to turn to CPM because the Malays were not prepared to shed blood to defend their country. She could have lived a confortable life but she choose not to. She was beautiful during her days and she could have married a rich man and live life comfortably, she choose not to. She is like a mother to me. May she rest in peace
